New materials often play an enabling role in modern-day optical science and technology. This trend is growing stronger in recent years as technologies continue to push the envelope of optics and photonics. Often a challenge encountered in optics is only adequatedly addressed with a new material, which often requires a synergetic application of knowledge in physics and chemistry. Examples exist in a wide range of technologies, spanning topics from fluid mechanics to biomedical imaging nad to solar energy. Here we elucidate such interplays between optics and new materials in our past works.

报告人简介:Dr. Ye Pu is a senior scientist in the Laboratory of Optics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL). He recieved his BS in Optical Engineering from Zhejiang University in 1992 and his Ph. D in Mechanical Engineering (Fluid Dynamics) from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 2003. He worked as a postdoctoral scholar in Caltech 2003-2008, after which he joined EPFL as a scientist. He published 28 journal papers, three book chapters, and holds six US or world patents or applications.
