The fast-growing demand for sensing, actuation, computation and communication poses great challenges that the conventional semiconductor electronics integrated circuits alone seem insufficient to address. Implementing disruptively innovative solutions is one of the major research focuses for both industry and academia. I am interested in solutions on the device level that take the unique advantages of photonics and phononics to complement electronics. In this talk, I will present my research on the on-chip manipulation of light (photons) with mechanical structures and sound (phonons) in nano-optomechanical systems (NOMS) and GHz acousto-optic devices, enabled by the state-of-the-art nanofabrication tools. Specifically, I will present 1) a NOMS switch device that uses optical force to mechanically switch light on and off to achieve optical signal amplification, 2) a NOMS seesaw device that can mechanically shuttle photons between distant photonic nanocavities and measure spin angular momentum of photons, and 3) integrated acoustic wave devices operating at microwave frequency up to 20 GHz that induce strong acousto-optic modulation of photonic nanocavities and suspended optomechanical waveguides. My research is an important step toward seamlessly integrated electronics, photonics and phononics devices on heterogeneous material platforms, which are potentially capable of addressing the challenges in future on-chip sensing, actuating, signal and information processing and computing in the classical and quantum regimes.
